The Salamanca is the first LNG-fueled passenger ferry to operate from the U.K. The vessel’s multi-fuel Wärtsilä engines can also use even cleaner fuels when they become available. The LNG-fueled ferry was delivered at the Jinling Shipyard in China on January 6, 2021. Swedish ferry operator Stena RoRo delivered the vessel on November 30, 2021. Brittany Ferries will charter the vessel on a long-term basis, and on March 25, 2022, the vessel completed its commissioning ceremony and began its own commercial maiden voyage on the 27th. With a length of 214.5 metres, Salamanca has been designed with efficiency and the environment in mind. The vessel is equipped with twin Wärtsilä 12V46DF (dual-fueled) engines, each generating 13,740 kW. Using LNG as a fuel will significantly improve air quality, by virtually eliminating NOx and particulate matter and reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore, particular attention has been given to its fuel-efficient design, with its long, slender hull and bow, and fine lines delivering excellent seakeeping in all weathers. The ferry will be supplied with LNG in the ports of Bilbao and Santander, enabling round trips between Spain and Portsmouth.

Brittany Ferries plans to deploy three more LNG-Power vessels in the coming years — Santoña will join the fleet in 2023 on the Portsmouth-Santander-Bilbao route, and two hybrid LNG-electric ships will enter service between France and the United Kingdom in time for the 2025 season. 

Salamanca and Santoña each carry two of FURUI 370m³ LNG fuel tanks. This type of fuel tank adopts a double-layer vacuum insulation design, which maximizes the cooling effect and holding time of the fuel tank. The pipeline layout of the TCS attached to the fuel tank is completely designed and developed by FURUI, and the key technologies are independent and controllable. After 14 years of technology accumulation and update iteration, FURUI CIT has always been in the first echelon of marine LNG fuel tank technology research and development, contributing FURUI technology and FURUI solutions to the world's emission reduction actions.
